Europe's ExoMars lander apparently crashed on the Red Planet, and an orbiting NASA spacecraft has spotted its grave, European Space Agency (ESA) officials said.
The lander, named Schiaparelli, stopped communicating with mission control about 1 minute before its planned touchdown on Mars Wednesday morning (Oct. 19). Newly released photos of the landing site by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) seem to confirm what ExoMars team members had suspected — that Schiaparelli died a violent death.
The photos show a bright feature consistent with the lander's 39-foot-wide (12 meters) parachute, as well as a 50-by-130-foot (15 by 40 m) dark patch likely created by the lander's impact, ESA officials said.

- Chriszlaststand: It's more likely the manufacturer wants another go at it. Failure is the cost of doing business. Everyone wants success, but not the first attempt. The Probe manufacturer more than likely has the contract to build each new and improved probe model. They have to recoup the cost of manufacturing, engineering, research & development, tooling, Exotic materials etc. and fabrication costs. Making special fixtures, building, troubleshooting, process, and inspect each component costs. It's like the team that goes to the playoffs & the finals. The teams starts to turn a big profits when all of the finals games are played. Ever notice this has been happening more and more the last few years. I'm not saying these games are rigged but maybe they played to result in a the outcome expected or not.

I think that exomars will land nevertheless because it turned out, that schiaparellis problem was that the programm controlling it thought that it was i think like 300 meters underground therefore it freaked out and caused the problems for which it crashed. So since the problem was only in the software esa is pretty lucky because those are the easiest errors to fix
