what a mess! the carb was completely clogged up with iron oxide dust.
bit of paraffin, a brush and it cleaned it out.
the rough running was caused the a jammed float level. i took the carb apart again, bent the float pin up a bit more so it lowered the fuel level in the float bowl and now its running perfect!
